I join the Bell Media Radio Network national night time show “Shane Hewitt and the Night Shift” to talk about William Shatner and his heavy metal band The Fuckers playing at Riot Fest in Chicago, the poster that haunts Ryan Gosling, why Christopher Nolan hates Uggs and I review “The Outer Threat” and suggest some retro space age cocktails to go along with the movie.
I wrote about the second Toronto Star Theatre Series, hosted by critic Joshua Chong, which saw subxcribers watch a performance of “Funny Girl” at the Shaw Festival and enjoy a stimulating conversation about the show afterwards over dinner at Zees Wine Bar & Grill in Niagara on the Lake.
“Joshua Chong kicked off the second Toronto Star Theatre Club event with an apt quote. ‘The show’s not over until the conversation about it ends,’ the Toronto Star’s senior arts critic said to club attendees at a matinee performance of the Shaw Festival’s ‘Funny Girl’ on June 27…”
I join the Bell Media Radio Network national night time show “Shane Hewitt and the Night Shift” to talk about Madonna sinigibng about one of her former husbands on her new record, review the new live-action “MOana” and suggest some drinks to go along with the movie!
I appear in a CTVNews.ca article by John Vennavally-Rao about Tilly Norwood, the AI “actress” who just landed a leading role in a film.
“Tilly Norwood, the AI-generated “actress” who became one of Hollywood’s most divisive figures last fall, is finally getting a starring role in a full-length feature film thanks to the British company that created her.
“Movie critic Richard Crouse thinks it’s a lousy development.
“’Oh, I hate this idea,’ said Crouse. ‘I hate the idea that we are taking a non-human actor and giving that non-human actor a role that could have been played by a human…'” Read the whole thing HERE!
Hosted a Q&A for “AntiDiva: The Carole Pope Confessions” at the beautiful Paradise Theatre on Bloor Street. Carole Pope, director Michelle Mama and producer Allison Grace talked about everything from how the film got made and collecting the wonderful archival material that appears in the film to Carole’s interview with Jimi Hendrix and her experience working on the animated “Rocket Robin Hood” show. They’re doing it again tonight with Tara Sloan as host! Can’t make it? The movie will be available to stream later in the month on Documentary Channel, Sunday July 19 and on CBC Gem Friday, July 24! Thanks to Touchwood PR for asking me to host! It was a blast!
Here’s some info on the documentary:
Antidiva: The Carole Pope Confessions is a raw, rollicking portrait of Carole Pope—music icon, provocateur, and queer trailblazer whose fearless voice and unapologetic sexuality reshaped rock ‘n’ roll. From the underground grit of 1970s Toronto to opening for David Bowie, Pope’s incendiary lyrics and magnetic presence shattered expectations of what a woman, let alone a lesbian, could be onstage.
More than a music doc, Antidiva is a time capsule of queer resistance and chosen family, charting Pope’s creative symbiosis with Kevan Staples, her complicated relationships, and the bittersweet realities of aging in an industry that sidelines outsiders. Through archival treasure, electrifying performances, and present-day vérité, director Michelle Mama captures Pope’s contradictions: tough yet tender, jaded yet vibrantly alive.
Featuring k.d. lang, Peaches, Jann Arden, and Rufus Wainwright, Antidiva stands as a battle cry for self-expression, queer joy, and the artists who refuse to be tamed.
Fast reviews for busy people! Watch as I review three movies in less time than it takes to brush your teeth. Have a look as I race against the clock to tell you about the World War II drama “Pressure,” the romantic crime drama “Tuner” and the existential horror of “Backrooms.”
