ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM: 4 STARS. “like eavesdropping on history in real time.”

SYNOPSIS: An invaluable document of the Harlem Renaissance, “One Upon a Time in Harlem” is like an invitation to a party with the most interesting people you’ll likely ever meet.

CAST: Aaron Douglas, Arna Bontemps, Richard Bruce Nugent, James Van Der Zee, and Countee Cullen’s widow, Ida Mae Cullen. Directed by David Greaves.

REVIEW: “Once Upon a Time in Harlem” is a historical document that feels as alive and rich as it did the day it was shot.

Conceived by filmmaker William Greaves, it documents a remarkable August 1972 gathering of artists, poets, painters, musicians and scholars who gathered at Duke Ellington’s townhouse in New York City to reflect on the cultural, artistic, and intellectual movement of the 1920s and 30s known as the Harlem Renaissance.

Shot verité-style, the documentary isn’t just a record of an extraordinary event, it’s also a tribute to the legacy of change ushered in by the people who assembled that afternoon.

The roving camera catches 96-year-old Leigh Whipper, the first Black member of Actors’ Equity, marvelously reciting, from memory, a speech he delivered as Haile Selassie in the 1943 film “Mission to Moscow.” Street corner orator Hubert Harrison’s impact is recalled by activist Richard B. Moore, and pilot Hubert Fauntleroy ‘The Black Eagle’ Julian is remembered for parachuted over Harlem.

In 98 minutes, politics and art are dissected and debated, poetry is performed and history is captured.

In dialogue and debate it celebrates the party guests and absent friends, but, more importantly, provides context for their lives and achievements.

One Upon a Time in Harlem’s” fifty-four-year-old 16mm footage of their reminiscences, disagreements and conversation is so intimate it feels as though you, as a viewer, are eavesdropping on history in real time. It’s an absolute must see that looks back but also feels timely in its passionate world view.
