I DECLARE WAR: 3 ½ STARS
A cross between Bugsy Malone and Lord of the Flies, I Declare War follows a group of kids playing a game of war that spirals out of control. In the story there’s a duality—it’s a metaphor for the brutality of war and a nod to adolescent imaginations. It’s unsettling to see kids shooting at one another (their weapons switch back and forth between realistic guns and paint bombs) but the movie has real tension, a few laughs and even if the performances aren’t always stellar, it’s a keenly observed look at kids blurring the line between fantasy and reality.
