IHEARTRADIO: CANADIAN COMIC ICON RICK MERCER + AUTHOR JOELLE KIDD

On the Saturday September 13, 2023 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet Rick Mercer. He needs no introduction, but here’s one anyway. Rick is a comedian, satirist, author and television host who co-created the groundbreaking CBC satire “This Hour Has 22 Minutes,” where his “Talking to Americans” segment became a cultural touchstone. As host of “The Rick Mercer Report,” he blended political rants, cross-country adventures, and celebrity encounters, earning over 25 Gemini Awards and multiple honorary degrees. He’s also a bestselling author of memoirs like “Talking to Canadians” and “The Road Years,” and has now launched the Stand-Up for Canada Comedy Tour, performing alongside rising stars in 21 cities, from Saskatoon to St. John’s. Check rickmercer.com. for tickets and info on shows near you.

Then, we meet writer, award-winning journalist and editor Joelle Kidd. In 1999, after three years of secular living in Eastern Europe, she moved back to Canada and was enrolled in an evangelical Christian school. Immediately, she found herself in a world of upbeat Christan pop music and purity education, trying to make sense of this unfamiliar preteen cultural landscape.

In her book “Jesusland,” Joelle writes about the Christian pop culture that she was suddenly immersed in, from perky girl bands to modest styling tips, and draws connections between this evangelical subculture and the mainstream.

IHEARTRADIO: COMEDIAN AND AUTHORS BRENT BUTT + RICK MERCER!

On the Saturday November 25, 2023 edition of the Richard Crouse Show we meet two Canadian legends.

First up is stand-up comedian Brent Butt, the star, writer and/or producer of TV shows such as “Corner Gas,” “Hiccups” and “Corner Gas Animated.” He recently added a new line to his resume, thriller author. His debut novel is “Huge,” and it is indeed a huge bestseller.

Set in 1994, the darkly comedic psychological thriller follows a trio of comics on a tour put together by a shady Winnipeg-based comedy booker, through small-town Manitoba and Ontario. The situation goes from bad to worse to downright frightening and violent as they try and get off the road in one piece.

Then, we’ll meet Canada’s sharpest and funniest political satirist, Rick Mercer. His latest project is a book titled “The Road Years: A Memoir, Continued…” It’s a look at the his wildly popular show The Mercer Report, it’s beginnings, it’s end and everything in between, including Every living prime minister. Rock and roll royalty from Rush to Randy Bachman. Olympians and Paralympians. A skinny-dipping Bob Rae. And Jann Arden, of course, who gets a chapter to herself.

On this encore presentation of “Pop Life,” Timothy Simons chimes in on the shooting the first episode of “VEEP” even though he was sure he would be fired at lunch, playing politics for laughs and portraying everyone’s favourite punching bag.

“What ended up happening was, when we were filming the pilot and I was incredibly nervous and on my first day when I was worried that I was going to get fired at lunch there was that thing that I had to do, which was compartmentalize the fact that I was on a giant HBO show, directed by Armando Iannucci, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus into this idea that I’ve never been on a giant HBO show before, but I have spoken to 6 people in a room before and if I focus on that it seemed more attainable.”
