LOVELY MOLLY: 2 STARS

The opening shot of “Lovely Molly” mimics the most famous “Blair Witch Project” image—a close-up of a woman sobbing. Perhaps it was director Eduardo Sánchez’s sly way of reminding viewers that he was behind one of the creepiest movies of the 1990s.

This home-alone-horror story begins with Molly (Gretchen Lodge) and Tim (Johnny Lewis) getting hitched and moving into her late father’s old rambling house. Big house filled with memories (and possibly even spirits)? Rural setting? Skeptical local law enforcement? What could go wrong? Well, if you are a former drug addict whose husband is a long distance truck driver who spends much of his time on the road, everything. Molly morphs from blushing bride to blank-faced victim of old memories and possibly even a spirit or two. By the time she mouths the words, “He’s here,” it’s off to spooky town.

There are a few truly weird and creepy moments in “Lovely Molly”—all topped with an atmospheric score by Tortoise—unfortunately they are surrounded by a dull, plodding story with very little pay-off which climaxes in one of the most terrifyingly unsatisfactory climaxes in recent memory.
