CFRA Ottawa At Work with Leslie Roberts: RICHARD ON THE OSCARS!

Richard joins the CFRA Ottawa’s show Ottawa At Work with Leslie Roberts to discuss the Oscars and their identity crisis.

Listen to the whole thing HERE! (Starts at 16:33)

The Oscars appear to be in the midst of an identity crisis… on the one hand they did not cave to forces who want to see blockbusters nominated, like Spider-Man: No Way Home, in an effort to bolster ratings. They stayed true to the idea of nominating movies they regard as cinema.

And yet, on the other hand, they cut categories from the live broadcast that celebrate documentarians, editors, makeup artists, hairstylists, composers, production designers, animators and sound editors, the very people who make cinema and now won’t get the same chance to enjoy their moment like other Oscar winners.

So, one hand the Academy seems to announcing that they are staying hardline on the kinds of movies they want to celebrate while, at the same time, suggesting that no one wants to watch the people who are integral to making those films get an award.

They are adding a fan award, which to me is a mistake. We already have the People’s Choice Awards.
